FAQ
Taekwondo is an ancient martial art that originated in Korea. Literally translated, “Tae” means to kick or smash with the foot, “Kwon” means to punch with the fist using destructive power, and “Do” means art or method. Thus, taekwondo may be loosely translated as “the way of kicking and punching”.
It originally developed as a means of self-defense and was eventually integrated into the lives of ordinary Koreans. Today, taekwondo is taught as a very effective means of self-defense and it is distinct from other martial arts with its emphasis on kicking techniques.
